Het verhaal van English Book Club

English Book Club
Since February 2022, Mencia has its very own English Book Club. As a tto school, with an international learner profile, we’re very proud of this. The English Book Club is open to all students, regardless the year they’re in. The only requirement is a love of reading (in English).
Currently, we have approximately 25 members who meet up 4 to 6 times a year. Normally, we offer 2 books to read within a certain theme (past themes have been “detective”, “dystopia”, “gothic fiction” and “romance”, see below) and students can choose which of the 2 they want to read (some will even read both!).
Furthermore, we discuss what other books we’ve read and give each other recommendations (or warnings!). Last year, we also did a book swap. For the book swap each member brought a personal favourite and had to swap their book with a partner. As a result, students read something which they would normally not have chosen themselves, thus expanding their literary horizon even further!
All this book talk usually makes one very thirsty, so we always have tea and cake or biscuits to sustain us throughout our meetings.
For this year’s end-of-the-school-year-event, 16 members of the English Book Club came to school on their day off to watch the film adaption of James Dashner’s 2009 dystopian YA novel “The Maze Runner”. We treated them to a nutritious and hearty lunch (pizza). Also, for their participation this year they were rewarded with a beautiful book club member pin.
